There are many names for it...
Sewer deduct meter, summer meter, by-pass meter, sewer sub-meter, sewer adjustment meters (SAMS), seasonal water meter, second water meter, auxiliary meter, irrigation meter, or a sprinkler meter. They all have the same goal of saving you money!

This secondary meter would be installed after the main water meter to specifically measure the amount of water NOT flowing into the sewer system. That amount of water can then be deducted from your sewer bill. If you use larger amounts of water for sprinklers, filling ponds or swimming pools, landscaping, or any other outdoor activities, this type of meter could help reduce your sewage charges.

Some municipalities have information on their website about adding a deduction meter, for a list of some municipalities that allow for a deduct meter installation please see the Deduct Water Meter Town Chart. It is important to note that not all towns allow for installation of a deduct meter, so remember to always check with your local town before installing anything on your water line. Some towns require you buy the meter from them, others do not offer that, and you are responsible to find a meter for your application.

Another application for a deduct water meter would be in a multiple resident building such as a condo or townhouse where there is one common outdoor spigot used for washing cars or something similar. Often the water is metered on a single unit in the building. A deduct meter on the spigot would allow you to deduct this usage from whichever tenant sees that water usage on their bill.
